2016-2020 Ingleborough ‘Stories in Stone Project’

Between 2016 and 2020, the NYGP’s ‘Ingleborough rocks! Project’ formed part of the Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Stories in Stone Project’ developed by the Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership. As part of the ‘Ingleborough rocks! Project’, a geodiversity audit of the Ingleborough area was carried out, five leaflets were producing providing details of seven geological trails together with an app of the trails.

Launch, by the English Geodiversity Forum, of the English Geodiversity Charter.

Autumn 2014

NYGP prepares the background geological information for the Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Stories in Stone’ Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership Project.

As part of the Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Stories in Stone’ Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership Project the NYGP submits a bid for the ‘Ingleborough rocks – Project!’.

NYCC funding available for the creation of a new NYGP website.

NYGP prepares the background geological information for the Heritage Lottery Funded Upper Nidderdale Landscape Partnership Project.

iPhone and Android apps produced for the Settle and Stainforth geological trails.

The Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership ‘Stories in Stone Project Heritage Lottery Fund bid is successful with a grant of £2.1m which with match funding takes the full programme value for delivery to £2.65m.

A further five Local Geological Sites approved – Old Ingleton Quarry, Carle Fell Quarry, Scar House Gill, Woodale and Scar House Reservoir.

Publication of the leaflet for landowners of Local Geological Sites.

A further application is made by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust for a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to develop the ‘Stories in Stone Project’ centred on the Ribblesdale – Three Peaks Area.

The first three Local Geological Sites approved – the Ingleton Group exposure at Horton Quarry, Threshfield Quarry and Kilnsey Crag.

Early 2013

Nidderdale AONB publishes the Greenhow Geology Trail leaflet.

Late 2012

A grant of £4,000, from NYCC, was made available to the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the NYGP to identify Local Geological Site landowners, prepare a leaflet for LGS landowners, and to produce a draft Vale of York/Your Dales Rocks Project LGAP.

Autumn 2012

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust publish the Settle and Stainforth Geotrails leaflet.

March 2012

NYCC agree to fund the cost of the NYGP website, previously funded by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

Early 2012

An unsuccessful application for a grant of £3.5 million was made, by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, to develop the ‘Stories in Stone Project’ centred on the Ribblesdale – Three Peaks Area.

Late 2011

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust reported that the NYGP should remain as a partnership as at this stage the current scale of the partnership would not warrant the time and cost of the requirements of creating a new charitable trust.

Late 2011

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, made an internal appointment of a Geo-Dales Project Officer, and obtained a further grant of £45,000 to implement the Geo-Dales Project centred on the Langcliffe/Victoria Cave, Upper Nidderdale and Greenhow areas.

Early 2011

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust use a grant from the Yorkshire Dales LEADER Fund to assess the viability of the NYGP acquiring trust status, and to appoint a Geo-Dales Project Officer.

2010

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust joined the Partnership.

Late 2009

Publication of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority funded ‘Rocking in the Dales’ leaflet.

October 2009

Grant obtained from Natural England to carry out surveys of eight candidate Local Geological Sites.

August 2009

Funding obtained from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority to purchase another licence for digital map data from the British Geological Survey. 

March 2008

Publication of the Your Dales Rocks Project Area Geodiversity Audit Report. Additional funding for the two ALSF projects was obtained from the British Geological Survey, North Yorkshire County Council, and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

October 2007

A further successful ALSF bid enabled the Partnership to undertake a geodiversity audit of the Your Dales Rocks Project Area.

May 2007

Publication of the Local Geodiversity Action Plan for the Your Dales Rocks Project Area 2007-2012.

March 2006

Publication of information leaflet and Draft Local Geodiversity Action Plan for the Your Dales Rocks Project Area.

2006

The British Cave Research Association, and the University of Leeds joined the Partnership.

January 2006

Grant obtained from English Nature to purchase digital map data from the British Geological Survey.

January 2006

Grant obtained from English Nature to create the NYGP website.

October 2005

The NYGP was successful in obtaining an ALSF grant to produce a Draft Local Geodiversity Action Plan for the Your Dales Rocks Project Area, together with an information leaflet.

March 2005

The British Geological Survey, English Nature (Natural England), Hanson Aggregates, Harrogate Borough Council, Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, North Yorkshire County Council, Tarmac, and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority agreed to form the Steering Group of the North Yorkshire Geodiversity Partnership.

Late 2004

Informal approaches were made to a variety of potential partners considered to have an interest in Earth science conservation in North Yorkshire.
